Grace Fu responds to motion on securing Singapore’s food future

40:47 Min

Securing Singapore’s food needs in a fragmented world faced with growing disruptions is central to the government’s food resilience strategy, said Sustainability and the Environment Minister Grace Fu. It seeks to diversify imports, establish global partnerships, 'grow local' and stockpile. In parliament on Wednesday (Sep 9), Ms Fu said local farms that have tapped official support schemes have reaped real improvements, and more help is on the way. This is under a refreshed food strategy which aims to produce 20 per cent of Singapore’s fibre needs and 30 per cent of its protein needs by 2035. The Singapore Food Agency is supporting the Singapore Agro-Food Enterprises Federation to match local produce supply with demand, while developing new demand channels, including institutional buyers and caterers. On MPs’ suggestions to mandate firms to source from local farms, Ms Fu said this could inadvertently reduce access to more affordable sources of food and increase costs for businesses and consumers. *Audio issues inherent from source
