Motion: Azhar Othman on government response to political salaries review

10:48 Min

Pay should never be a barrier for capable and public-spirited Singaporeans to enter public service but the rewards must remain meaningful and connected to the lives of the people they serve, said NMP Azhar Othman. The question before the House is the appropriate, defensible and principled basis for determining how much is enough, he said in parliament on Thursday (Sep 10). He wanted to know why national leadership compensation is anchored to the apex of the private sector. He pointed out that the government is not a corporation and public service is not a market transaction. He proposed adjusting the structure to a fixed salary of 45 per cent and variable component of 55 per cent, based on shared risks and impact on the median citizen's real income growth, unemployment rates and housing affordability. If the nation thrives, its leaders thrive and "that is solidarity”, he said.
