Wan Rizal on Workplace Fairness Bill
The provisions on mental health in the Workplace Fairness Bill signify a significant step towards ensuring that workplaces are not only productive, but also inclusive, compassionate and fair, said MP Wan Rizal. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Jan 8), he noted that the Bill recognises mental health conditions as a protected characteristic and creates a much-needed safety net for workers, encourages equitable treatment and reduces stigmatisation. He wanted to know how mental health conditions would be defined and what diagnostic criteria or medical certifications are required for them to qualify as a protected characteristic.
