Xie Yao Quan on Constitution and Penal Code Amendment Bills relating to Section 377A

16:44 Min

The debate on the Bills relating to Section 377A is a "huge milestone", said MP Xie Yao Quan. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 29), he said it reflects the political leadership of a Government and a Parliamentary majority which have resolved to rise to their duty and not abdicate from their responsibilities. They also have the political courage and gumption to confront the difficult issues head-on and do what is right, even if there is no political favour to be gained and indeed every chance of a political cost to bear, he said. Mr Xie said once the prospects of the courts striking down Section 377A in a future challenge became clear, the Government of the day did not choose to "un-see" what it had seen. Instead it "sprang into action, put it squarely on the agenda" to find the way forward for all Singaporeans. He has this message for Singaporeans, especially the youths who desire a more robust democracy: "Let us celebrate this moment. This is our democracy in action. This is our democracy growing stronger."
