Xie Yao Quan on Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Bill

Youths in Singapore are concerned about the proposed Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Bill, MP Xie Yao Quan told Parliament on Monday (Oct 4). He pointed to two areas - the apparently sweeping scope of powers being provided for and a desire for transparency in the administration of those powers. Given the “broad” definition of activities on behalf of a foreign principal, Mr Xie said youths are worried about whether their interactions with foreign friends - more precisely, any conduct critical of the Government or its policies and with any shade of foreign involvement - would run afoul of the Bill. To uphold public trust, he urged the Government to be transparent in disclosing its actions under the Bill and to constantly communicate the intended purpose of the Bill, which he described as “narrow”.
