Yip Hon Weng on Copyright Bill

Protecting intellectual property is critical for innovation, which in turn is critical for Singapore to thrive as a knowledge-based economy, said MP Yip Hon Weng. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Sep 13), he pointed out that more Singaporeans are setting up home businesses or freelancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. It is timely for Singapore to update its copyright laws accordingly, he said. Mr Yip stressed that copyright laws should not merely protect the rights of creatives to commercialise and prevent exploitation of their work. They should also respect the work of creatives to encourage more Singaporeans to share and inspire.
