Yip Hon Weng on Cross-Border Railways (Border Control Co-Location) Bill
For the Rapid Transit System Link between Singapore and Malaysia to succeed, the border must be made seamless for convenience, said MP Yip Hon Weng; however, he raised concerns about accountability and sovereignty in practice. For example, noting that Malaysian officers will have immunity for actions taken in discharging their duties, he asked how people will determine if a line has been crossed and what practical recourse is available if things go wrong. He asked if the government would consider a “dedicated liaison mechanism” to help Singaporeans and international visitors navigate cross-border issues. He also asked if Singapore can investigate and take action if offences such as bribery or misconduct occur within Malaysia-designated areas on its soil. Such areas must not become legal gray zones, Mr Yip said. He spoke in parliament on Tuesday (May 5).
