Yip Hon Weng on Elections (Integrity of Online Advertising) (Amendment) Bill

10:13 Min

The Elections (Integrity of Online Advertising) (Amendment) Bill is critical for protecting the integrity of Singapore’s election process, said MP Yip Hon Weng. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Oct 15), he warned that deepfakes can erode trust, destroy reputations and mislead citizens. “We cannot allow technology to hijack democracy,” he said. Free speech should not be a “free pass” for spreading falsehoods and the Bill must carefully balance the freedom of speech with measures to counter misinformation with clear definitions and safeguards against biased enforcement, he added. Mr Yip stressed the need to uphold transparency and democracy. He pointed out that countering deepfakes demands a multi-faceted strategy. He wanted to know how the Bill would tackle fake accounts and deepfakes from private messaging channels. He said Singapore must invest in sophisticated technology to stay agile in the face of AI advancement, as well as empower citizens with digital literacy skills. While addressing foreign interference and ensuring swift enforcement within the election timeline is critical, democracy must be defended not just at the ballot box, but in the digital space, he added.
