09:17 Min

The illegal wildlife trade should be recognised as "serious organised crime", said MP Yip Hon Weng. The jail terms should be raised to no less than five years and the aggregate fine should be three times the market value of the goods, he said in Parliament on Monday (Jul 4). Mr Yip stressed the need to do more to investigate and conduct enforcement in the digital realm, as well as hold online technology companies accountable to better detect illegal wildlife products. He also said more should be done through public education, effective enforcement and heavier penalties to deter people from selling and buying wildlife as pets.
