Yip Hon Weng on Enlistment and Other Matters (Amendment) Bill
National Service is a cornerstone of Singapore’s security and identity, and the Enlistment and Other Matters (Amendment) Bill is timely in reflecting the modern landscape, said MP Yip Hon Weng. Speaking in Parliament on Friday (Feb 16), he stressed the need to align manpower needs with extensions of specific ranks in the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Civil Defence Force. He also highlighted the importance of safeguards for technological advancements to mitigate potential risks like fake notices. Mr Yip also urged the Government to enhance the welfare, rights and continued contribution of volunteers. He called for greater transparency in ministerial regulations, with clear frameworks, robust Parliamentary oversight and public scrutiny. He believes that with clarity and transparency, Singapore can strengthen the Enlistment Act and build a future-proof National Service framework that will not only safeguard its military might but also unite its people.
