Yip Hon Weng on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters (Amendment) and Other Matters Bill
Singapore must balance effective crime control and support for international justice with protecting the rights and privacy of Singaporeans, said MP Yip Hon Weng in Parliament on Monday (Nov 11). He was referring to changes proposed under a new Bill - in particular, broadening cooperation with overseas jurisdictions and permitting statements for foreign criminal investigations. Mr Yip asked about safeguards for sensitive information shared with foreign authorities, including financial data; whether Singapore residents have a right to contest data requests; and how people can be protected from “unjust” foreign confiscation orders. Adding that Singapore is recognised as a safe haven for global investments, he asked if banks can reject financial disclosures if complying would harm their reputations.
