Yip Hon Weng on Platform Workers Bill
The Platform Workers Bill is a step in the right direction with its provisions on mandatory CPF contributions, insurance coverage and dispute resolution mechanisms, said MP Yip Hon Weng. However, he raised several other areas which require attention - facilitating long-term career development for platform workers, improving mental health support, ensuring robust protection against threats and abuse, and fostering inclusive dialogue to empower workers to actively participate in shaping policies that affect them. On a broader front, Mr Yip wanted to know how the Bill compares with similar regulations in other jurisdictions; how potential unintended consequences will be mitigated, such as increased operational costs for platform companies leading to a reduction in earning opportunities for workers; and whether the Bill will significantly impact transport and food costs for consumers. He spoke in Parliament on Monday (Sep 9).
