Yip Hon Weng on Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill

14:38 Min

The Road Traffic (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill strengthens deterrence, modernises enforcement and closes gaps, said MP Yip Hon Weng. Speaking in parliament on Tuesday (Aug 4), he highlighted five areas to build a safer and more trusted road system, including purposeful endangerment, automated enforcement and record keeping. These may look like separate issues but they point in a single direction, he said. The measure of the bill will not be the number of prosecutions, notices issued or sentence lengths but the tragedies that never happened, said Mr Yip. It should not be seen as merely to write tougher laws, but to build a safer system, and with it a society that expects and protects, nothing less, he added.
