Yip Hon Weng on Singapore’s COVID-19 response

07:09 Min

To fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore adopted many measures recommended by the World Health Organization. However, each country has to tailor its approach to its specific traits and there is also the problem of recommendations being implemented in a timely manner, said MP Yip Hon Weng in Parliament on Monday (Mar 20). He said Singapore must not “blindly follow” the advice of international bodies but also rely on independent data and research to make informed decisions in its own best interests. He asked how Singapore can ensure access to such data, develop the capability to evaluate it critically, and pre-emptively develop its own guidelines before the next pandemic strikes. Mr Yip also spoke about the implementation of vaccination-differentiated safe management measures (VDS) in workplaces. He asked if these measures were really necessary and whether more should have been done to support employees who lost their jobs due to VDS, or if legislation should have been moved to ensure that retrenchments were done as a last resort.
