The Veterinary Practice Bill creates a framework to raise professionalism and improve regulation in the industry, but it will be judged by whether it gives pet owners confidence at the point of care, said MP Yip Hon Weng. He raised several points of concern - the growing cost of veterinary care with no clear benchmarking; a regulatory gap involving veterinary nurses and paraprofessionals who may be allowed to perform high-risk procedures; ensuring the process for pet owners to seek redress is not daunting; and that registration for vets allows for easy compliance while maintaining high standards.
