Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim on Administration of Muslim Law (Amendment) Bill

09:49 Min

Who will be the intended trustee of wakaf created by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) - the council itself, or another party? MP Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim asked this question in Parliament on Monday (Feb 5), noting that it is important as certain obligations would not apply if MUIS is the trustee and no mutawalli has been appointed. He added that he had previously raised issues on implementing a specific dispute resolution mechanism for wakaf. It is an opportunity for the Syariah Court to be the forum for such disputes to be heard, he said, through a framework which could include mediation or arbitration. This would ensure that the correct expertise will be provided and allow matters relating to religious issues and wakaf to be dealt with sensitively.
