Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim on racial harmony and constitutional amendment bills

15:32 Min

The Maintenance of Racial Harmony Bill presents an opportunity to strengthen Singapore’s commitment to foster a cohesive and inclusive society, said MP Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 4), he highlighted the roles that Singaporeans play to maintain racial harmony and the continued importance of existing race-based integration policies and organisations. He pointed out that a community-led approach would be more effective in supplementing and fostering long-term racial harmony. “No amount of laws can change the heart of a community,” he said. Mr Zhulkarnain also sought clarifications on the Bill. One of them relates to the Community Remedial Initiative. He wanted to know what measures will be put in place to build and ensure transparency and rigour in its implementation.
