Kia’s latest EV models tell a story of brand transformation

When Kia unveiled its transformation from a traditional automaker to a sustainable mobility solutions provider in 2020, few foresaw the impact this direction, dubbed Plan S, would have on the latest electric vehicles (EVs) from the Korean giant.

Now, at the Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) running Mar 27 to Apr 7, the Kia EV5 makes its ASEAN debut, joining its larger counterpart, the EV9, which premiered earlier at the Singapore Motorshow in January.

With its inaugural appearance at BIMS, Kia presents a visionary concept booth titled Windows of Inspiration, offering visitors a multi-sensory experience. Massive digital screens within this dynamic space shift and evolve, presenting boundless creative possibilities. With its modular and fluid nature, Windows of Inspiration redefines our interaction with environments, and showcases Kia’s commitment to innovation and creativity.

Seamlessly aligning with Kia’s holistic approach to EV design under Plan S, this ethos extends beyond vehicles to provide sustainable mobility solutions that enhance customer lifestyles through innovative in-car spaces, cutting-edge products and meaningful services. This dedication is evident in the sleek design and advanced features of the EV5 and the premium EV9 line of sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

DEDICATED EV PLATFORMS

While most EV SUVs are built on shared platforms with conventional internal combustion engine variants, the Kia EV5 and EV9 are purpose-built for electric propulsion only. This translates to improved space utilisation for a clutter-free interior. Additionally, the approach contributes to an elevated driving experience, as these vehicles are engineered from scratch to harness the full potential of EV powertrains.

Central to their design philosophy is delivering an exceptional user experience. Inside, the cabin resembles more of a contemporary lounge than a typical car interior. The EV9 features second-row seats capable of swivelling 180 degrees, allowing passengers to face those in the third row effortlessly. This instantly fosters a more interactive experience among occupants, whether engaging in conversation or enjoying entertainment.

For the EV5, every aspect of its cabin design has been considered to provide an ambiance that blends relaxation and enjoyment. This becomes even more evident in low-light conditions, thanks to variable mood lighting adorning the front section of the crash pad and both the front and rear door trims.

The emphasis on interior comfort and hospitality is important in an EV. Recognising that occupants may spend extended periods in their vehicles, whether unwinding or staying productive during charging sessions, Kia has engineered the EV5 to cater to these needs. Similarly, the spacious EV9 allows occupants in the first and second rows to luxuriate in comfort.

In the EV5, the seats offer maximum flexibility, with the ability to recline fully, complete with lower leg rests. The second row features full-flat folding rear seats that create a generous space comparable to a double bed.

Moreover, the process of charging an EV has evolved significantly. With the proliferation of high-speed chargers, the EV9, for example, can be swiftly charged from 20 per cent to 80 per cent in as little as 11 minutes with the most powerful commercial chargers on the market.

LIVING SPACES ON WHEELS

More than just a means of mobility, the Kia EV5 and EV9 are extensions of living spaces. With features such as V2L (vehicle-to-load), these SUVs enable users to power electric devices such as electric grills, coffee makers and many other appliances for picnics or cookouts that take glamping to the next level. To complement this experience, the centre console in the EV5 is equipped with a cooler and warming function, allowing users to maintain beverages chilled or food warm.

The other highlight of the EV5 and EV9 is the smart infotainment connectivity and comfort setting functions. Wireless integration of Apple CarPlay makes it effortless for occupants to access their playlists, podcasts, saved destinations and contact lists from their cars, enhancing the driving experience with personalised entertainment and navigation options.

Practical features such as Remote Parking Assist 2 make the EV5 and EV9 suited for densely populated cities. This intelligent system enables autonomous parking in parallel, perpendicular or even slanted spaces, reducing the hassle of navigating tight spots. Furthermore, drivers can remotely manoeuvre their vehicles from outside using the key fob, eliminating the need for awkward exits or concerns about nearby obstacles such as pillars.

PURE DRIVING PLEASURE

Behind the wheel of the Kia EV5 and EV9, drivers can look forward to peace of mind, courtesy of the latest advanced driver assistance systems. Boasting over 20 safety features, including Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 2 with capabilities like auto evasive steering assist, junction crossing and junction turning, these vehicles are equipped to support drivers and prevent collisions.

Above all, it’s how well the car drives that matters to those who appreciate the thrill of driving. With instantaneous maximum torque characteristic of EVs, acceleration becomes a joyous affair. The EV9, for instance, sprints from 0km/h to 100km/h in just 6.0 seconds – a remarkable feat for a large SUV that seats six.

Pair this level of drivability with a fresh design philosophy that Kia calls Opposites United – a concept that uses disruption and contrast to create characterful aesthetics – and what you have is a winning formula of head-turning identity through the distinctive “tiger face” front end and futuristic star-map headlights and taillights, along with a welcoming, harmonious interior design.
