When you think “cool cocktail scene”, one does not immediately think “Adelaide”. In fact, if one is being honest, Adelaide might not make the list at all. New York, Berlin, Melbourne, Hong Kong? Hell, yeah. Adelaide? Erm … I hear the kangaroos are lovely?

That’s the thing about Adelaide. It tends to surprise you seeing as most of us know so little about it.

The cocktail scene in Adelaide is booming. Small, intimate venues with great mood lighting and a fresh vibe that is neither tired nor jaded. That’s all thanks to the new liquor licensing laws implemented in 2013, allowing small venues to flourish in the narrow, little used, laneways and side streets of the CBD. The plan was to breathe new life into the city — and it’s working, with 53 small bars opening in 2015 alone. The Clever Little Tailor is one of the loveliest bars in Peel Street, the buzziest laneway right now, to benefit from the new laws. The three-year-old establishment is housed in a gorgeous restored historic building, flaunting exposed stone walls, lots of hard wood, and a selection of spirits, wine and locally brewed beers clearly curated by people who take their booze seriously.
