How To Afford The Life You Want

Seven things women who are truly independent have in common
Source: Giphy.com … And it isn’t just about handling your own bills. by Alicia Thong Being an independent women in your 20s these days is more than just perfecting an attitude. And it's much more than just being in control of your life at this very moment. It is also about having the foresight to make the right decisions now so you stay in control in the days to come. Think you're an independent woman? Well, see how many of the seven points you identify with and give yourself a pat on the back with every one that makes you smile. 1. You believe in having a social life (whether you’re with someone or not)
Source: Giphy.com You may have a special someone in your life, but you still make the time to stay in touch with your friends and family. So what if your partner’s not available this evening? There are a ton of other plans you could put in place and people you could call up in the next five minutes. Also … 2. You are perfectly fine being alone
Source: Mrwgif.com That’s right! You might not just be okay doing things on your own — you might really enjoy it. Whether that means settling into a good book, or working out with your headphones on, or taking a solo trip to spend a little time with yourself. If you find time on your hands without any plan, pure bliss. 3. You have your own opinions and goals
Source: Giphy.com You’ve made a decision on your views on life as well as what you want to achieve — and you’re not flinching from what the nay-sayers have to say. Your personal point of view matters to you most, and simply moving with the crowd is just silly. Plus, seeing as you’ve always got your own plans (see Point 1), you have better things to do than play sheep. 4. You take charge of the “kids” conversation
Source: Giphy.com Starting a family can be a wonderful thing for two individuals in love, but it’s not necessarily something you feel pressured to do at any point of time. You have a good idea of what it takes to be a mother both in the physical and mental aspects, and you’re open to listening to the opinions of your close friends and family (read: mother-in-law) on the subject. That said, you know you’re the one in charge of deciding when it’s right to take some time off your career to give birth to another human being. So if there’s a bun in your oven somewhere down the road, you’ll definitely be the one who’s most happy it happened. 5. You’re financially savvy
Source: Giphy.com It’s taken you some time to grow your experience and skillset, and you’re now steadily making your way along your career path (one that you actually can see an end-position you’re happy with). Each month, you take home a decent pay cheque that allows you to not only save, insure yourself, and possibly invest a little. It’s a comfortable life. But it’s not just about being comfortable for now – you know you need a sound plan for your money to afford you the life you want in the years to come, even if this means seeking professional financial advice from the experts to get you there. The best part is, if you keep a close watch on your wallet like you have been doing so far, that dream you had as a teen to start your own small business could now be a reality down the road. (Unless it’s to start up a bunny-inspired bistro that doubles as a costume shop. That idea’s mine.) 6. You know how to pamper yourself
Source: Giphy.com There are still many women who would rather wait for someone else to buy them fancy things and take them out to swanky spots. Sure, you appreciate the generosity of others, but if you really want something, you know you’ll just go get it yourself. Not only have you found a level of financial comfort with the time and effort you’ve put into your career, it also feels so much more empowering when you can answer the question “Who bought you that bag?” with a plain and simple: “I bought it.” 7. Basically, you know what makes you happy
Source: Mrwgif.com You clearly know what makes you smile after a long week at the office. This, coupled with your well-planned finances, allows you to indulge in what really makes you happy now and in the future. Solo yoga retreats over the weekend, perfecting your Fire Poi routine with your friends, or cave diving around the region? Doesn’t matter if no one else gets it and if no one wants to do these things with you. Why? Because: Point 2. And that, world, is how us women roll. Right this way for more stories on how to afford the life you want.
