Though this brilliant change of hue means you simply cannot leave this lake out of your Instagram feed, but it’s also the main source of water for the nearby town of Mt Gambier, so don’t go expecting to take a dip in your Speedos.

B How to drink and not drive

This region, with its 25 cellar doors, is famous for Cabernet Sauvignon. The region’s rich red soil also produces outstanding Shiraz, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. Some famous vineyards to lookout for include Wynn’s Coonawarra Estate, Hollick Wines, Zema Estate, Balnaves of Coonawarra and Rymill Coonawarra. So here’s a pro tip: Ditch the car at one of the five wineries on the Coonawarra Wineries Walking Trail and cover the 5km distance on foot, stopping to sample as much wine as your “bus number 11” can handle. If you are stopping for the night, A Must @ Coonawarra is one of the town’s best accommodation options, just a short stroll from the vineyards.

C Meat and greet

If you’re looking for a good slab of meat, you head to the butcher, if you want the best cut of steak, you go straight to the source. For the ultimate paddock to plate experience, stop at The Tasting Room, located on a working cattle ranch. Enjoy stunning panoramic views of Canuda National Park while feasting on prime cuts of export grade Wagyu beef that is not available for purchase anywhere else in Australia.

D Boutique wines forever

Unlike the famous Barossa and McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek — or “Langers” to those in the know — is a wine region that’s more of a well-kept secret. And you know how much we love stuff other people don’t know about. Head to Bleasdale winery and try their extensive range of table and fortified wines. You can also check out their hand-hewn red gum vats and the 3.5 tonne lever basket press. Best of all, it’s less than an hour’s drive from Adelaide.

E Horsing around the Harbor

Take the one-of-a-kind horse-drawn tram across the causeway to Granite Island, just off the coast of Victor Harbor, to see little penguins or do a spot of whale watching between June and October. Powered by magnificent 800kg Clydesdale Horses, this vintage tram was first put into service in 1894. After that, do a cliff-top walk towards Port Elliot and follow your nose to the Port Elliot Bakery. Singaporean food-queuers, the savoury pastries here are well-worth the effort. If you’re still have time, Big Duck Tours lets you check out wild sea lions and dolphins on a 45minute boat tour from Victor Harbor causeway. Finally, head in the other direction of Victor Harbor for an overnight stay with stunning ocean views at The Bluff Resort.

F A zoo without fences

Drive your car onto the ferry and head to Kangaroo Island (or simply KI to the locals). Known for its diverse array of native Australian wildlife, KI is almost seven times the size of Singapore … with a population of less than 5,000. To put that in perspective, there are 174,770 people living in Ang Mo Kio. You’re likely to meet more kangaroos, koalas, wallabies and sea lions lounging on the beach than human beings. The place is also famous for its selection of dairy products and honey produced by Ligurian Bees, the world’s last remaining genetically pure stock of bees.
