CNA938 Rewind - Sisterhood & Gangland Life - Author Wen-Yi Lee’s “When They Burned the Butterfly”
In ‘Culture Club’, Melanie Oliveiro speaks with Singaporean writer Wen-yi Lee about her second novel, “When They Burned the Butterfly”. Set against the backdrop of early 1970s Singapore, it is about loner schoolgirl Adeline Siow, whose mother dies in a house fire with a butterfly seared onto her skin. Adeline searches for her mother’s killer and soon gets entangled in a magical, dangerous world of secret societies. Lee will talk about how she crafted the novel and the research that went into recreating a bygone era of Singapore.
