St Luke’s Eldercare is organising a fund-raising Walkathon to encourage understanding, inclusiveness and appreciation for ageing well in Singapore. It’s for both young people and seniors, and it’s a good opportunity to exchange skills, knowledge, and experiences. Asia First’s Arnold Gay and Andrea Heng hear from Lim Zhi Yao, a Yr 3 student from the Bachelor of Science in Finance, SUSS, and Jimmy Tan, Assistant Director of St Luke’s ElderCare, who tell us more about what 300 participants can look forward to.

Daily Cuts - Climbers with special needs peak Mount Fuji

A group of Singaporean climbers with special needs made it to the top of Mount Fuji! This is Japan’s tallest mountain. 10 climbers  all in their 20s and 30s have conditions like Down syndrome, global developmental delay or autism. They were accompanied by 16 caregivers, coaches and volunteers. Howard Yap, Assistant Coach, YMCA Special Needs Inclusive Challenge & Clara Toh, Senior Executive, Marketing & Corporate Communications, YMCA of Singapore explains how this feat is achieved.

Daily Cuts - ASEAN: More homework needs to be done

The 43rd ASEAN Summit is taking place in Jakarta. Besides Myanmar, other geopolitical challenges like the situation in the South China Sea will have to be tackled by the region’s leaders. Daily Cuts - Preschool abuse case: Is the punishment proportionate to the crime?

ECDA or the Early Childhood Development Agency has come up with penalties for the preschool operator involved in the cases of abuse. They will be fined $5,000 and the principal of that school will also not be deployed in a similar role in a preschool. ECDA has also apologised for lapses in its own investigation. CEO Tan Chee Wee pledged to strengthen its processes and training. Charmaine Teo, Vice President of AECES (Association of Early Childhood Educators Singapore) explains if the punishment fits the crime.

Daily Cuts - Preserving Pulau Ubin

After discovering that his mum grew up on Ubin, Nor Syazwan Abdul Majid felt this affinity towards the popular touristy island and wanted to do more as a descendant of the islanders of Pulau Ubin. He wants to preserve the heritage and culture of the residents of Pulau Ubin. The SUSS undergraduate is now working with NParks to restore some houses on the island. Singapore Today’s Lance Alexander and Daniel Martin speak with Syazwan, and Robert Teo, Director of Pulau Ubin from the National Parks Board.
