10 new Covid-19 cases; no new infection at purpose-built dorms since end-March

SINGAPORE — There are no new cases detected in purpose-built dormitories for the first time since March 28 this year.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) said this on Friday (Oct 9) in its evening update on the coronavirus situation.

There is just one new case of a migrant worker staying in a dormitory among the 10 new cases announced on Friday.

There are 43 purpose-built dormitories with 3,000 to 25,000 workers each, housing about 200,000 migrant workers altogether, as well as other types of smaller dormitories, such as factory-converted ones.

For the third day in a row, there have been no cases in the larger community. The rest of the new cases are imported cases.

MOH said that all of the fresh cases have no symptoms.

The nine imported cases comprise one permanent resident, four work permit holders, one work pass holder and three special pass holders.

Two of the special pass holders are crew members of a ship that had arrived in Singapore from Malaysia on Sept 23.

The two men — a 45-year-old Filipino and a 55-year-old Ukrainian — had remained on the ship until they were transferred to a quarantine facility.

They were then swabbed during quarantine and found to have the coronavirus.

The remaining seven imported cases had travel history to Canada, Indonesia and the Philippines.

They had been placed on 14-day stay-home notices and tested positive while serving their notices at dedicated facilities.

Overall, MOH said that the number of new cases in the community has remained stable at an average of one case a day in the past two weeks.

The number of cases in the community with no known sources of infection has also remained stable at an average of fewer than one a day in the past 14 days.

The one case involving the migrant worker living in a dormitory had been identified earlier as a contact of previous cases.

MOH said that the man had already been quarantined to prevent further transmission of the virus.

At the same time, the ministry has been monitoring the existing clusters for any further transmission of Covid-19.

“As there have been no more cases linked to the cluster at Cochrane Lodge I for the past two incubation periods, the cluster has now been closed,” it said.

UPDATES ON REMAINING CASES

The total number of infections in Singapore now stands at 57,859.

Of these, 57,675 people have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, including seven on Friday.

There are still 37 patients in hospitals and most are in stable condition or improving, except for one, who is in intensive care.

Another 120 patients are isolated and being cared for at community facilities. They have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still tested positive for Covid-19.

Twenty-seven people have died from complications due to Covid-19.
