142 new Covid-19 cases in Singapore, lowest daily tally since April 8; 2 new clusters identified
SINGAPORE — Singapore has confirmed 142 new cases of Covid-19, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) in a press release on Friday (June 19).
This is the lowest daily tally in more than two months, equalling the 142 cases reported on April 8.
One new community case was reported on Friday. The remaining 141 infections were linked to foreign workers living in the dormitories. There are no new Singaporean or permanent resident cases on Friday.
According to the health ministry, the community case is a 21-year-old prison inmate from Sri Lanka on a social visit pass who had arrived in Singapore before the implementation of border measures.
"He had been segregated from the general inmate population since his admission to Changi Prison Complex on June 6, and was tested positive for Covid-19," MOH said.
The ministry added that the inmate was tested as part of Singapore Prison Service’s proactive screening of newly admitted inmates even though he was asymptomatic.
Overall, MOH said that the number of new cases in the community has decreased from an average of nine cases a day in the week before to four a day in the past week.
The number of unlinked cases in the community has also decreased from an average of four cases a day in the week before to two a day in the past week.
“We will continue to closely monitor these numbers, as well as the cases detected through our surveillance programme,” MOH said.
The total number of Covid-19 cases in Singapore now stands at 41,615.
Separately, MOH said that it has identified two new clusters of infections in the dormitories here. They are located at 10 Kaki Bukit Road 1 and 6 Kian Teck Crescent.
UPDATE ON THE REST OF THE CASES
In all, MOH said that 33,459 people have fully recovered from the Covid-19 infection and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, including the 747 on Friday.
There are currently 212 patients who are still in hospital.
Of these, most are stable or improving, and two are in critical condition under intensive care.
MOH said that 7,918 patients are isolated and cared for at community facilities. These are those who have mild symptoms, or are clinically well but still test positive for Covid-19.
Twenty-six people have died from complications due to Covid-19 infection.
