SINGAPORE — An 18-year-old man was charged in court on Friday (Oct 9) with voluntarily causing grievous hurt with a dangerous weapon over a slashing incident at Boon Lay Shopping Centre on Wednesday.
James Teck Jing You, a Singaporean, is accused of attacking a 23-year-old man with a kitchen knife at 221 Boon Lay Place, where the shopping centre is located, at about 12.40pm on Wednesday.
The victim suffered multiple deep cuts to his face and was conscious when taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.
The police said in a statement on Thursday that officers from the Jurong Police Division established Teck's identity and arrested him on Wednesday through ground enquiries and with the help of footage from closed-circuit television cameras.
Witnesses told TODAY that the incident happened on the second storey of the shopping centre, outside an NTUC FairPrice supermarket. The two men were seen punching each other near the supermarket’s entrance.
The relationship between the two men is unclear.
Teck, who appeared in court via a video link, will be remanded at the Institute of Mental Health for two weeks for a psychiatric evaluation.
He is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct 23.
If found guilty, Teck could face life in prison or a jail term of up to 15 years, and could also be liable for a fine or caning.
