SINGAPORE: A 21-year-old man will be charged in court on Monday (Mar 25) for his suspected involvement in a hit-and-run case which caused two people to suffer serious injuries.

The police said they were alerted on Saturday at about 11.40pm to an accident involving a car and two pedestrians along Sims Avenue towards Sims Avenue East.

A 51-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were conscious when taken to hospital. They are currently warded for treatment.

"The driver did not stop to render assistance to the injured and allegedly fled the scene after the accident," said the police in a news release.

Through ground inquiries and with the aid of video footage from a witness and police cameras, traffic police officers established the identity of the driver and arrested him on Sunday.

In footage of the incident circulating online, a car is seen passing a row of shophouses before it collides with two people crossing the road.

The two pedestrians are flung into the air upon impact with the car seen moving off without stopping.

All motorists are urged to abide by traffic rules to keep our roads safe for everyone, said the police.

"It is an offence to leave an accident scene without rendering assistance. Traffic Police will spare no efforts to bring motorists who commit serious traffic offences and endanger the safety of other road users to justice."

The man will be charged in court with various offences: Driving without due care causing grievous hurt, driving without a valid licence, driving without insurance coverage, taking a vehicle without the owner's consent, failing to stop after an accident, failing to provide help to the injured after an accident and moving the vehicle without a police officer's authority.

The offence of driving without due care causing grievous hurt carries a fine of up to S$5,000, an imprisonment term of up to two years, or both.

For driving without a valid licence, a person may face a fine of up to S$10,000, a jail term of up to three years, or both.

The offence of using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage, taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent and moving the vehicle without a police officer’s authority, carries a fine of up to S$1,000, or a jail term of up to three months, or both, for each of the offences.

For failing to stop after an accident and render assistance to the injured, a person may face a fine of up to S$1,000, a jail term of up to three months, or both.
