24 new Covid-19 cases in Singapore, all imported including 15 foreign domestic workers

SINGAPORE — Singapore on Monday (Jan 4) reported 24 new imported cases of Covid-19, 15 of whom are foreign domestic workers. There were no cases in the wider community.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) said that all of the cases had no symptoms. They had already been placed on stay-home notice or isolated upon arrival in Singapore.

  Two dependant’s pass holders who arrived from India

• Two work pass holders who also came from India

• Eighteen work permit holders who arrived from Indonesia and India, of whom 15 are foreign domestic workers

• One is a short-term visit pass holder who arrived from Romania to board a ship docked here as a crew member

In addition, MOH said that one of the work permit holders is a ship crew who had boarded a vessel on Nov 1 in Indonesia.

The 28-year-old Indonesian man had been placed on quarantine on Dec 31 as he was identified as a close contact of a previously reported case who is a crew member of the same vessel.

The man was taken to a government quarantine facility on Jan 2, and tested positive for Covid-19 the next day.

“Prior to that, he had not disembarked from the vessel. All the remaining crew members of the vessel have been placed on quarantine since Dec 31,” MOH said.

The number of new cases in the community has gone up from one in the week before to nine in the past week, the ministry said.

The number of cases in the community with no known links to confirmed cases has also gone up from one in the week before to three cases in the past week.

UPDATES ON REMAINING CASES

The total number of infections in Singapore is now 58,721.

Of these, 58,497 people have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, including 10 on Monday.

There are still 67 patients in hospitals and most are in stable condition or improving, except for one who is in intensive care.

Another 128 patients are isolated at community facilities. They have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still tested positive for Covid-19.

Twenty-nine people have died from complications due to the disease.
