SINGAPORE — A 25-year-old Malaysian man has been arrested in the early hours of Wednesday (Oct 25) after he was found with 1kg of heroin under the seat of his motorcycle at Woodlands Checkpoint.

The arrest is the third drug-related case uncovered by the authorities this week.

The man arrived at the Woodlands Checkpoint on a Malaysian-registered motorcycle and was directed for further checks by officers from the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB).

During the course of the checks, the officers detected two bundles suspected to contain controlled drugs under the seat of the motorcycle, that were later found to be heroin.

In a joint ICA and CNB statement, the HOME team agencies said that the estimated street value of the drugs were estimated to be worth S$106,000.

Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, a smuggler faces the death penalty if the amount of diamorphine (or pure heroin) trafficked exceeds 15g. According to the CNB, 15g of diamorphine is equivalent to 1,250 straws, enough to “feed the addiction of about 180 abusers for a week”.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Earlier on Tuesday, a Singaporean man was arrested in Macpherson. A small amount of the drug ‘Ice’ and cash amounting to S$2,400 were found on him, while a search of his bicycle led to the discovery of about 1kg of heroin and 25g of ‘Ice’. The estimated street value of the drugs was about S$107,000.

On Monday, a 27-year-old Malaysian man was arrested by officers from the ICA at Tuas Checkpoint for attempting to smuggle 1kg of cannabis, estimated to be worth about S$10,000.
