5 new Covid-19 infections in Singapore; no fresh cases in foreign worker dorms for second day running
SINGAPORE — Singapore has confirmed five new cases of Covid-19, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said in an update on Wednesday (Oct 14) evening.
There are two new community cases based on the ministry's investigations so far.
No fresh cases were reported in foreign worker dormitories for the second day so far.
In addition, there are three imported cases who had all been placed on stay-home notices upon arrival in Singapore.
Among the new cases, one is asymptomatic and was detected from proactive screening and surveillance, while the remaining four were symptomatic.
The two cases in the community are Singaporean students aged 13 and 10. MOH said that they are family members of a previously confirmed case, and all three are from the same household.
The students, a boy and a girl, were placed on quarantine on Oct 3, after their family member was confirmed to have been infected with Covid-19, but they tested negative for the coronavirus.
However, they developed symptoms during quarantine and tested positive on Tuesday.
They were last present in their respective schools, which were not named, on Oct 2.
For the imported cases, they were:
A 19-year-old female Singaporean who returned from the United Kingdom
A 30-year-old man who arrived from Russia and is a short-term visit pass holder working in Singapore
A 26-year-old man from India who is a student's pass holder
MOH said that investigations are in progress and all the identified close contacts of the cases have been isolated and placed on quarantine. They will also be tested at the start and end of their quarantine period to detect asymptomatic cases.
The ministry will also conduct serological tests (to detect past infections) for the close contacts, to determine if the new cases could have been infected by them.
Overall, the number of new cases in the community has gone down from an average of one case a day in the week before, to an average of fewer than one a day in the past week.
The number of cases in the community with no known sources of infection has also dropped from an average of fewer than one case a day in the week before, to none in the past week.
UPDATE ON REMAINING CASES
The total number of Covid-19 cases in Singapore now stands at 57,889.
Of these, 57,752 have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, including 12 on Wednesday.
There are still 39 patients in hospital. Most are stable or improving, and no one is under intensive care.
Another 70 patients are isolated and cared for at community facilities. These are those who have mild symptoms, or are clinically well but still test positive for Covid-19.
So far, 28 people here have died from complications due to Covid-19.
