5 people hospitalised after Upper Thomson Road accident leaves car flipped over

One eyewitness said that people rushed out from the nearby coffee shops to help direct traffic and push a flipped over Range Rover the right side up.

SINGAPORE — The lunchtime crowd at eateries along Upper Thomson Road received a rude shock on Wednesday (April 17) afternoon after an accident at Jalan Todak resulted in a vehicle flipping over and five people hospitalised.

The police said that they were alerted at 2.08pm to an accident involving two cars and a pick-up truck. Five people aged between 25 and 63 were conscious when taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

TODAY understands that the five people suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident caused traffic congestion lasting at least an hour along the stretch of Upper Thomson Road towards Newton till Sin Ming Avenue, according to a tweet by the Land Transport Authority at 2.50pm.

University student See Xinyi told TODAY that she was queuing up at an eatery to buy food when she heard a loud bang.

Curious to find out what had happened, the 21-year-old went to the junction of Upper Thomson Road and Jalan Todak and saw a badly damaged Mercedes and a Range Rover that had flipped over onto its roof.

An image taken by Ms See showed a black Mercedes with a crumpled bonnet and it appeared to be heading in the direction towards MacRitchie Reservoir.

The Range Rover appeared to be moving out of Todak Road and suffered damage to both doors on the left side. The left rear window was also dislodged.

“Passers-by ran out to try to help, with several of them directing traffic while the rest helped to flip the Range Rover over,” Ms See said, adding that most of them had rushed out from the two nearby coffee shops.

She said at least eight people had helped push the vehicle right side up.

Among the five injured were two women in their 20s or 30s and an elderly man, she added. The women were seen holding ice packs to their foreheads.

“The two females seemed okay and they were supported by passers-by to take a seat in the coffee shops,” said Ms See.

While she was uncertain of the severity of the man’s injuries, she noted that he was conscious when he was carried on a stretcher into the ambulance.

Police investigations are ongoing.
