82-year-old man charged with murder of elderly flatmate in Toa Payoh

SINGAPORE — An 82-year-old man, Pak Kian Huat, was charged in court via video-link on Monday (Sept 2) with the murder of a 79-year-old woman.
Lim Soi Moy was found lying motionless in a 21st-storey unit at Block 191, Lorong 4 Toa Payoh, in the wee hours of Sunday morning, the police said. They had received a call for help at about 3.40am.
Lim was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene. Pak, who is also known as Pek Kiah Huat, was arrested later.
TODAY understands that the two were not married but were living together, while the police said that preliminary investigations revealed that they know each other.
District Judge Christopher Goh ordered Pak to be remanded at the Central Police Division for a week for investigations, with permission to be taken out.
Pak cannot be offered bail due to the nature of the charge. He will return to court on Sept 9 and will be further remanded for a psychiatric evaluation.
If convicted of murder, he could receive the death penalty.
