SINGAPORE — About 900 lanterns will be on display at this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival celebration in Chinatown, during the street light-up. And to do its bit for the environment, the festival will deploy LED lanterns for the very first time.

The lanterns are designed and conceptualised by the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and are made by craftsmen from China.

This year’s theme is “journey of re-discovery” which will explore the origins and history of the festival.

The traditional folk tale will be told through lantern displays with mythical figures such as Chang’E, Hou Yi and the Jade Rabbit making appearances. Chang’E will be the focal point of festival, standing at 12m tall.

The lanterns will be displayed at New Bridge Road, on top of Eu Tong Sen Street and South Bridge Road, from Sept 3 to 30.
