SINGAPORE — A book to celebrate 50 years of the Malay/Muslim community in Singapore was launched yesterday. It traces the community’s progress and contains articles from 41 contributors, who touched on various topics, including controversial ones such as the issue on tudungs, or Muslim headscarves.
The book Majulah! 50 Years of Malay/Muslim Community in Singapore was co-edited by former Senior Minister of State Zainul Abidin Rasheed, and Dr Norshahril Saat from the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies-Yusof Ishak Institute.
“It’s an important effort on the part of the community to document our history. At the end of the day, if we don’t appreciate our history, nobody will,” said Minister-in-Charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim.
“This is an effort that we should support and indeed affirms the need for us to document our history and heritage so that the next generation can understand.”
The book will be sold at all major bookstores, and retails at S$68 for the hardback edition and S$37 for the paperback version. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
