Bukit Timah Food Centre to be demolished in 2024; integrated development to be built on current site
Existing stallholders will be relocated to an interim hawker centre and market by the second half of 2024.
SINGAPORE: Bukit Timah Market and Food Centre will be demolished in 2024 to make way for an integrated development.Â
In response to CNA's queries, a spokesperson for the People's Association (PA) on Thursday (Nov 9) said the estimated timeframe for stallholders to vacate from the current food centre to the interim hawker centre and market is scheduled for the second half of 2024.Â
A briefing on Mar 13 was conducted at Bukit Timah Community Club with the hawkers, informing them that the interim hawker centre and market would be completed later than originally projected.Â
The new projected completion date of the Bukit Timah integrated development is estimated to be in the second half of 2029, due to site conditions and technical complexities. More time is also needed to finalise the design and secure funding, said the PA spokesperson.
The hawkers were also informed that PA and various agencies had found an additional use for the interim hawker centre and market, housing public sector facilities on the second and third floors. Future operations of the hawkers will not be affected on the ground floor.Â
"All existing stallholders at the Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre will have the option of taking up a stall at the new (integrated development), regardless of whether they choose to move to the interim hawker centre and market,” the PA spokesperson said.Â
Meanwhile, Bukit Timah Community Club will remain at its current location at 20 Toh Yi Road until the integrated development is ready.Â
In the Urban Redevelopment Authority's (URA) Master Plan 2019 for the central region, it was stated that Bukit Timah will have a new one-stop integrated facility with a community club, redeveloped market as well as a hawker centre near Beauty World MRT station.Â
"It will also feature a range of new amenities such as an indoor sports hall, community library and elderly facility to enhance liveability."Â
