SINGAPORE — Changi Airport was busier on all fronts in June than it was in the same month a year earlier.

Changi Airport Group said on Thursday (July 27) the airport handled 5.21 million passengers last month, a 7.7 per cent year-on-year increase, as aircraft movements rose 5.4 per cent to 30,920 landings and take-offs. Cargo shipments grew 5.5 per cent over the same period to reach 172,040 tonnes, it added.

Passenger traffic in June was boosted by growth across all regions. Among Changi Airport’s top 10 country markets, India – leading the gainers since February – clocked robust 25 per cent year-on-year growth, while Vietnam and China also registered double-digit growth of 12 and 11 per cent, respectively. In terms of routes, Bangkok was the busiest for the month, followed closely by Kuala Lumpur.

Changi Airport’s stellar performance in June, the traditionally busy holiday travel season, rounded up a strong first half of the year, which saw passenger traffic rising 5.7 per cent from the corresponding period last year to 30.4 million. India was the fastest-growing among Changi Airport’s top 10 country markets for this period, with more than 2 million passengers travelling between the two countries.

In the first half, aircraft movements at Changi Airport were 3 per cent higher at 183,230 landings and take-offs, while 1.02 million tonnes of airfreight were shipped through the airport, rising 6.8 per cent year-on-year.

Changi Airport received the ‘Best Airport – Asia’ award at the 2017 Asian Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain (AFLAS) Awards, the first time that it has won this award. Changi Airport also received three awards at the Airport Food & Beverage Conference and Awards 2017 – emerging winner in the ‘Airport Food and Beverage Offer of the Year’ and ‘New Food and Beverage Concept of the Year’ global categories, as well as the ‘F&B Marketing and Promotions Campaign of the Year (Asia Pacific)’ category.

On June 20, Changi Airport established a new city link to Athens with Scoot’s 4 times’ weekly non-stop services to the Greek capital. As at July 1, more than 100 airlines operate at Changi Airport, connecting Singapore to some 380 cities in about 90 countries and territories worldwide. With more than 7,000 weekly scheduled flights, an aircraft takes off or lands at Changi Airport roughly once every 90 seconds, the airport operator said.
