Collision on SLE involving SBS Transit bus injures four
SINGAPORE — The second accident in five days involving an SBS Transit bus has left its driver, 29-year-old Kelvin Tan, in hospital with several fractures.
Apart from Mr Tan, three others were injured in this morning’s (May 19) collision, involving the bus, a trailer and a tipper truck, on the Seletar Expressway (SLE) towards the Bukit Timah Expressway near the Yishun exit.
The driver’s sister, Ms Georgina Tan, told TODAY that her brother suffered four fractures in his right leg, and one in his left ankle. Mr Tan’s wife and his two-week-old daughter flew in from Kuching, Sarawak, last night to be with him.
Ms Tan said she did not know when her brother, a Malaysian, would be discharged.
According to the police, they received a call about the accident involving the three vehicles at 10.17am. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) dispatched two fire engines, two fire bikes, two ambulances and three support vehicles to the scene.
By the time the SCDF arrived, 30 people had already evacuated themselves from the bus.
Hydraulic rescue tools were used to free Mr Tan and the driver of the trailer from their vehicles. The two drivers, along with two bus passengers, were conscious when they were sent to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.
Apart from Mr Tan, the other three accident victims — two men, aged 49 and 70, and a 41-year-old woman — were treated for minor injuries and had been discharged, the hospital said. Ms Tammy Tan, senior vice-president of corporate communications for SBS Transit, said: “We are in contact with the injured and will be rendering assistance as best we can. We are, meanwhile, assisting the police in their investigations.”
Last Friday, a 30-year-old woman died after she was knocked down by an SBS Transit bus outside Punggol Bus Interchange.
