SINGAPORE — The annual Chingay parade entered the heartlands yesterday with a Night Fiesta at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, where the colourful floats and some 2,000 performers brought the parade to life.

An estimated 50,000 visitors were expected to turn up for the event, which was also attended by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and his wife Ho Ching.

The event also paid tribute to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew and other founding fathers, including a performance by a 300-member choir. The People’s Association also organised about 2,000 volunteers to double up as Keep Singapore Clean Ambassadors, who encouraged the visitors to keep the park clean.

Themed Lights of Legacy, Brighter Singapore this year, the parade was held on Saturday. About 8,000 volunteers had performed at the parade, as did foreign groups from China, Russia and Indonesia.
