Courts employee at Funan Mall, food delivery rider among 11 new Covid-19 cases with no links

  • There were 38 Covid-19 cases reported on May 18
  • Of these, 27 were in the community, 11 of which were unlinked
  • New cases were added to clusters at Learning Point tuition centre and Changi Airport
  • There were 11 imported cases and none in foreign worker dormitories
  • Five people are in critical condition under intensive care

 

SINGAPORE — A man who works at a Courts electronics store at Funan Mall as well as a food delivery rider for Deliveroo and Grab were among 11 new Covid-19 community cases on Tuesday (May 18) that have not been traced to any source of infection.

The 11 were among 27 newly reported cases in the community, said the Ministry of Health (MOH).

Another 11 cases were imported, making it a total of 38 new infections reported on Tuesday.

The Changi Airport cluster saw three new additions, bringing the total number of infections there to 87. 

Four more were added to the Learning Point tuition centre cluster, which has grown to 24 cases.

There were no new cases in the foreign worker dormitories, the ministry added.

The 11 community cases with no known sources of infection were:

  • A 46-year-old Singaporean woman who is an investment banker with DBS located at Marina Bay Financial Tower

  • A 57-year-old Singaporean woman who works at the Ministry of Home Affairs. The woman received her first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine on May 8 and has tested positive preliminarily for the B1617 variant that originated from India

  • A 95-year-old Singaporean woman who is a retiree. She had a cough on May 15 and was taken to Changi General Hospital the next day for an unrelated condition. She was tested for the virus there

  • A 39-year-old Singaporean woman who is a manager at recruitment firm Cornerstone Global Partners but has been working from home since May 11

  • A 35-year-old Malaysian man who is a kitchen crew member at Kota Zheng Zong Bak Kut Teh located in Serangoon Gardens

  • A 51-year-old Singaporean woman who works as a clinic assistant at Dorothy’s Baby & Child Clinic at Bukit Timah Plaza

  • A 31-year-old Singaporean man who works at the Courts outlet at Funan Mall. He developed a runny nose, sore throat and cough on May 13 but did not seek medical treatment until May 15 when he had a temporary loss of smell (anosmia)

  • A 43-year-old China national who works at Jin Tai Tong Food Industries. The man developed a fever, sore throat, body aches and cough on May 17 and sought medical treatment at Raffles Hospital on the same day

  • A 26-year-old Malaysian man who works as a logistics officer at IT services firm DCSS Technology

  • A 40-year-old Singaporean man who works as a vending machine loader at Warburg Private Limited, and a food delivery rider for Deliveroo and Grab

  • A 38-year-old Singaporean woman who works as an analyst at HSBC bank but has been working from home since May 6

CHANGI AIRPORT CLUSTER

Three more cases were linked to an 88-year-old male Singaporean who is employed by Ramky Cleantech Services as a cleaner at Changi Airport Terminal 3. He was confirmed to have Covid-19 on May 5.

The three new cases were already quarantined, MOH said.

This brings the number of cases there to 87 — the largest community cluster in Singapore so far.

They were:

  • A 26-year-old Singaporean woman who is an IT engineer at multinational company Accenture but has been working from home since April 24. She is a family member and household contact of a previously confirmed case and was placed on quarantine on May 11

  • A 36-year-old Malaysian who works at Toast and Curry Sentosa cafe. The woman is a household contact of a previous case and was placed on quarantine on May 14. She has tested positive preliminarily for the B1617 variant 

  • A 27-year-old Malaysian who is employed by Ramky Cleantech Services as a cleaner at Robinson 77 building on Shenton Way. The man is a close contact of a previous case and was placed on quarantine on May 14

LEARNING POINT CLUSTER

Four more cases were linked to a 50-year-old Singaporean female tutor at Learning Point in Parkway Centre.They were:

  • A 37-year-old permanent resident who is self-employed. The woman is a family member and household contact of an eight-year-old boy who is a Yu Neng Primary School student and had attended classes at Learning Point. She was the boy’s caregiver when he was quarantined on May 13

  • A 43-year-old Singaporean woman who works as an executive at Zespri Hub but has been working from home since the end of April. She is a family member and household contact of a previous case and served as the eight-year-old’s caregiver when she was quarantined on May 13

  • A seven-year-old Singaporean boy who is a student at Catholic High School and attended classes at Learning Point

  • A seven-year-old Singaporean girl who is a student at CHIJ (Katong) Primary School. She last went to school on May 11. She also attends student care at Seedlings World Student Care@Frankel, and was identified as a close contact of two other cases. She was then quarantined on May 14

CLUSTER LINKED TO UNEMPLOYED WOMAN

Two new cases were linked to a 64-year-old female permanent resident who is unemployed.

They were:

  • A seven-year-old Malaysian boy who is a student at Yuhua Primary School. He last went to school on May 14. He was quarantined on May 15 and developed a fever, runny nose and cough the next day when he was tested for Covid-19

  • A 36-year-old Malaysian man who is a cook at Spring Court Restaurant. He is a family member of the 64-year-old woman and the boy above. The man developed flu-like symptoms and anosmia on May 12 but did not see a doctor. He was quarantined on May 15

CLUSTER LINKED TO SANOFI-AVENTIS EMPLOYEE

Two new cases were linked to a 35-year-old Portuguese woman who works as a sales personnel at bio-pharmaceutical firm Sanofi-Aventis.

They were:

  • A 40-year-old Filipina who is a foreign domestic worker and household contact of the sales personnel. She was quarantined on May 16

  • A two-year-old Singaporean boy who is a student at My First Skool (Westgate) and was last in school on May 14. He was quarantined on May 16

CLUSTER LINKED TO IT ENGINEER

There was one new case linked to an IT engineer at pharmaceutical firm AbbVie Operations Singapore. The 57-year-old Singaporean woman is a retiree and developed a fever, headache, cough and body aches on May 15. She went to a clinic the next day where she tested positive on an antigen rapid test. 

This cluster now has three cases.

CLUSTER LINKED TO PERSONAL CHAUFFEUR

Another new case was an 18 year-old who is a student at ITE College Central. She is linked to a 53-year-old personal chauffeur who was infected earlier, bringing the cluster to three cases. 

The student was quarantined on May 14.

OTHER LINKED CASES

Three other linked cases in the community were:

  • A 21-year-old permanent resident who works at The Goodburger Food Truck. The man last went to work on May 15. He is a close contact of a previous case and was placed on quarantine on May 16

  • A 39-year-old Singaporean woman who works as a bank officer at Mizuho Bank and last went to work on May 7. She was quarantined on May 15

  • A 59-year-old Singaporean man who works as a financial planner at insurance firm Great Eastern and is a family member and household contact of a previous case. The man — who received his first dose of the vaccine on May 8 — has tested positive preliminarily for the B1617 variant

IMPORTED CASES

The 11 new imported cases were all placed on stay-home notice upon their arrival here, MOH said.They were:

  • Three Singaporeans and three permanent residents who returned from France, India, Myanmar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United Kingdom

  • A long-term visit pass holder who came from the UAE

  • A work pass holder who arrived from the Philippines

  • Three work permit holders who arrived from Indonesia and the Philippines — two of whom are foreign domestic workers

UPDATE ON REMAINING CASES

The total number of infections in Singapore is now 61,651.

Of these, 61,134 people have fully recovered and been discharged, including 11 on Tuesday.

There are still 220 patients in hospitals. Of these, most are stable or improving, and five are in a critical condition.

Another 266 patients are isolated at community facilities. They have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still tested positive for Covid-19.

Thirty-one people have died from complications due to the disease.
