SINGAPORE — The two-year Detention Orders issued earlier this year to eight Bangladeshi nationals who were involved in a clandestine terror cell here have been cancelled as these individuals are either in jail or have been repatriated, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Thursday (Oct 6).

The men, aged between 26 and 34 and working in the construction and marine industries, were rounded up in April for forming a group called the Islamic State in Bangladesh (ISB) that aimed to bring their homeland under the Islamic State’s self-declared caliphate.

The MHA said two of these men — Sohag Ibrahim, 28, and Islam Shariful, 27 — were sent back to Bangladesh last month, after investigations into their illicit activities were completed. The Bangladeshi security authorities were “apprised of the repatriation”.

The six other members of the group have been sentenced to between two and five years’ jail for terrorism financing. They are Rahman Mizanur, 31; Mamun Leakot Ali, 30; Miah Rubel, 26; Zzaman Daulat, 34; Md Jabath Kysar Haje Norul Islam Sowdagar, 31; and Sohel Hawlader Ismail Hawlader, 30.

In the first month of the formation of ISB, the group had drafted a hit list and raised funds in Singapore to buy firearms and carry out attacks in Bangladesh.
