SINGAPORE — The family of Tanjong Katong Primary School teacher Terrence Loo have expressed their appreciation to all who’ve supported them “to help ease the passing of their beloved son”.
Mr Loo was one of the 10 Singaporeans who died in the earthquake at Kota Kinabalu last Friday.
In a letter released today (June 11), Mr Loo’s family said: “Words cannot express the grief that we are going through. As with any close-knit family, the loss of a child and sibling is often unexpected no matter how much time we have to prepare ourselves. But during this difficult time, we take solace in those that have come forward so graciously to help us through this difficult time.
“The kindness that we have been shown has been thoroughly unselfish and is much appreciated.”
Mr Loo’s family described him as a “smart young man on the cusp of his life”.
“Besides being an educator, Terrence is also a much beloved son and brother who was genuine in character, strong in spirit and most of all, a kind soul,” they added.
He had also “loved his job immensely”.
“Up to the end of his short life, Terrence was a teacher and a protector, and although we are extremely saddened with loss, we are also extremely proud.”
The family also thanked the ministers and members of Parliament, the Ministry of Education (MOE), the TKPS community, friends and members of the public “who do not know us at all, but have come forward anyway to show their love and support during this time of grieving”.
Mr Loo’s funeral will be held tomorrow.

Letter of thanks from the family of Terrence Loo
Following the events of the earthquake that took place in Sabah, Malaysia on the 5 of June 2015, the family of Loo Jian Liang Terrence Sebastian, wishes to thank the many wonderful supporters who have come forward to help ease the passing of their beloved son.
Terrence was a smart young man on the cusp of his life. As a teacher at Tanjong Katong Primary School, we know that he loved his job immensely, and always had lovely things to say about his students. Being a teacher does not stop at imparting knowledge, it also means undertaking the responsibility of protecting young ones under your charge. Up to the end of his short life, Terrence was a teacher and a protector, and although we are extremely saddened with loss, we are also extremely proud.
Besides being an educator, Terrence is also a much beloved son and brother who was genuine in character, strong in spirit and most of all, a kind soul.
Words cannot express the grief that we are going through. As with any close-knit family, the loss of a child and sibling is often unexpected no matter how much time we have to prepare ourselves. But during this difficult time, we take solace in those that have come forward so graciously to help us through this difficult time. The kindness that we have been shown has been thoroughly unselfish and is much appreciated.
We would like to thank Mr Goh Chok Tong, Mr Heng Swee Keat, Ms Indranee Rajah, all the other Members of Parliament and political leaders, who have taken the time out of their busy days to pay their respects at Terrence’s wake.
We are also tremendously grateful to counsellors and volunteers from the Ministry of Education who have been present round the clock to help out with our every need.
Most of all, we are aware that we are not the only ones who have suffered a loss. We would like to thank the wonderful students and teachers of Tanjong Katong Primary School, friends of the family and members of the public who do not know us at all, but have come forward anyway to show their love and support during this time of grieving.
Thank you.
