Fans queue up early ahead of One Direction concert

SINGAPORE — One Direction fans arrived as early as 4am today (March 11) to queue up at the Singapore Sports Hub ahead of the boyband’s much anticipated concert.

By about 10am, TODAY observed that the crowd had grown to an estimated 300 people, despite an earlier directive that fans could only begin queuing at 11am because of safety reasons.

Last week, Mr Jose Raymond, senior director of corporate communications and stakeholder management of the Singapore Sports Hub, had said that crowd control measures were put in place for the concert, with more than 30,000 people expected to be in attendance.

Francine Ynez Quek, 17, arrived at about 4am to reserve a good queuing spot. “I’m really excited to see them. Seeing them in real life is unreal,” she said.

Hana Soraya, 17, who arrived in Singapore from Sarawak, Malaysia two days ago, said: “I’m from Kuching. I’m here with my family and friends. I’m really looking forward to see them today (as) it’s my first time seeing One Direction.”

There was a moment of excitement at about 12pm, when singing was heard from inside the stadium. Fans, who thought that it was the boyband conducting a sound check, rushed to the gates to get a sneak preview, only to find out that it was a recording of their track being played instead.
