SINGAPORE: One person was sent to hospital and more than 200 others evacuated after two separate fires broke out on Friday (Jan 28) night in Tampines and Bedok.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said early on Saturday morning that it responded to a fire at Block 941, Tampines Ave 5, at about 10.30pm on Friday.

The fire was raging when SCDF officers arrived and had "totally engulfed" a two-storey unit on the 10th floor.

About 180 people from neighbouring units were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Firefighters had to force their way into the unit and subsequently a bedroom on the first storey where they found an unconscious man lying on the floor.

The man was rescued and assessed by an SCDF ambulance crew. He was sent to Changi General Hospital.

FIRE AT BEDOK COFFEE SHOP

Firefighters also responded to a fire at a coffee shop at Block 204, Bedok North Street 1.

SCDF said it was alerted to the fire at 11.50pm on Friday and when a team got to the scene, the blaze at the coffee shop was "well-alight", with kitchen exhaust ducting at the side of the building also on fire.

Firefighters use water jets around the premises to contain the fire in the coffee shop and the kitchen exhaust ducting fire. They then had to force their way into the premises to conduct internal firefighting operations, said SCDF.

It took under an hour for firefighters to put out the flames and 55 people from residential units above the coffee shop were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

SCDF said there were no reported injuries.

The cause of the two fires in Bedok and Tampines is under investigation.
