Four Leaves bakery suspends sale of sausage products

SINGAPORE — The Four Leaves bakery chain in Singapore has suspended the sale of all products containing sausages at all its outlets, following a complaint by a customer who found maggots in a sausage bun she bought.
In a Facebook post earlier this week, Ms Ivy Yeo said that she bought the bun from the bakery’s outlet at Hougang Mall.
Her eight-year-old son bit into the bun at home and saw that there were maggots crawling around the sausage. A video that Ms Yeo posted, showing the maggots moving in the bun, also went viral online.
She later took her son to see a doctor and he was referred to a hospital.
TODAY tried to contact her for comments but she did not want to speak to any media. Ms Yeo also took down her post on Wednesday (April 19), writing on her Facebook account that online users should not share her posts without permission.
Four Leaves has since apologised for “the unpleasant incident concerning the mini chicken sausage bun”.
In an official statement issued on Tuesday, its director Koji Tanabe said: “We have been using the same brand of sausage for many years, and this is the first time we have encountered this problem.
“As a responsible bakery and also as parents to young children ourselves, we totally understand... Ms Ivy Yeo’s concerns.”
The bakery added that “it is taking a very serious view towards the incident”.
All buns, including the mini chicken sausage buns, are made fresh daily. Any unsold buns are donated or thrown away “at the end of the same baking day”, it said, stressing that its outlets do not keep and sell buns that have been baked the day before.
The National Environmental Agency (NEA) has also inspected the bakery at Hougang Mall and found no hygiene lapses in the handling and preparation of the sausage buns. NEA added that the premises was well maintained and had no evidence of pests.
“All the food handlers were also found observing good food and personal hygiene practices,” it said.
Four Leaves has contacted Ms Yeo, and said that she has allowed the bakery more time to carry out investigations.
