SINGAPORE — Sixteen girls’ football teams took part in the 11th edition of Delta League, which ended yesterday — the first time girls’ teams have joined in since the programme was launched in 2011.

Organised by the Singapore Police Force and the National Crime Prevention Council, the league’s finals were held at the Singapore Sports Hub yesterday, following 324 matches played over the June school holidays.

In all, about 2,000 players from 107 teams took part, competing in two age groups — Under-16 and Under-18.

Besides playing football, the youths took part in other activities designed to inculcate in them a sense of social responsibility, teamwork and discipline. For instance, the youths took on the roles of crime-prevention ambassadors and helped spread crime-prevention advisories to members of the public along Orchard Road and 10 heartland malls across Singapore.

To date, Delta League has benefited more than 14,000 youths from all backgrounds.

The next edition of Delta League — which uses football as a platform to reach out to youth-at-risk and educate them about the consequences of crime — will run during the December school holidays.
