SINGAPORE – A malfunction in a line of Ikea’s safety gates has caused some children to fall down the stairs, with a few of the cases requiring medical attention.

This has prompted the Swedish furniture company to take action by recalling the products globally.

None of the incidents were reported in Singapore.

“Ikea urges customers who have a Patrull, Patrull Fast or Patrull Klamma safety gate to immediately stop using it and to bring it back to any Ikea store for a full refund,” Ikea said in a news release on Thursday (June 23).

Any safety gate extension unit of the Patrull model may also be returned for a full refund.

A third-party investigation found that the locking mechanism on the safety gate is not reliable, posing a risk for young children.

“We cannot accept that there is a risk of injury while playing and as an immediate and precautionary action we recall all Patrull safety gates,” said Maria Thorn, Acting Business Area Manager at Children’s Ikea.

A receipt is not required for the refunds.
