SINGAPORE — Internet and fixed voice services were down from Tuesday afternoon (April 11) in Jurong West, Boon Lay and Corporation Road, after a cable was cut by a third-party contractor carrying out piling works, affecting an estimate of more than 3,500 end-users.
NetLink Trust, the fibre network operator, said on Tuesday night that it received reports of “a fibre service interruption” at about 4.30pm.
“A fibre cut was subsequently confirmed to be at a worksite along Boon Lay Avenue. This incident was caused by a third-party contractor doing piling works. More than 3,500 end-users may have been affected.
“NetLink Trust has deployed recovery teams onsite and emergency service restoration is underway. Services will be progressively restored by (Wednesday) morning,” it added.
The service disruption affected the customers of all the three telcos as well as MyRepublic, a fibre service provider, with several users beginning to complain about the lack of service at around 4pm.
Singtel, M1, StarHub and MyRepublic all took to Facebook to inform customers about the disruption, as well as to provide updates.
The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) said earlier that it had asked NetLink Trust and the various service providers “to restore services as soon as possible, to minimise the inconvenience to affected customers”.
This is not the first time a cut cable has caused a network outage.
In February last year, a fibre cable cut by a third-party contractor during earthworks caused a service disruption for residents in Ghim Moh and Commonwealth. The outage in that incident lasted around 13 hours.
