SINGAPORE – Some residents in the Jurong West area are still without Internet and fixed voice services on Wednesday morning (April 12), as fibre network operator NetLink Trust discovered two new damaged cables.
In an update Wednesday morning, Netlink Trust said services were progressively being restored, but "progress has been hampered by poor site conditions and heavy rain". It added: "Most of the fibre cables damaged by the piling works contractor have been rectified. However, as more damaged cables were discovered this morning, a full service restoration is expected to be delayed till late afternoon today."
Services in the Jurong West, Boon Lay and Corporation Road were expected to be restored by 4am on Wednesday, following reports of a service disruption on Tuesday evening.
Singtel had also told its customers via a Facebook post around 9am that the estimated restoration time had been pushed back to "this afternoon".
About 15 minutes later, telco M1 disclosed that NetLink Trust had found more damages to its cables. Internet services provider MyRepublic said separately that NetLink Trust found two more damaged cables.
M1 said in its latest Facebook post: "NetLink Trust has rectified some of the damaged fibre cables impacting service in Jurong West.
"It has found further damage to its fibre cables and has informed us that it expects service restoration by late afternoon."
NetLink Trust said on Tuesday night that it received reports of “a fibre service interruption” at about 4.30pm.
It added: “A fibre cut was subsequently confirmed to be at a worksite along Boon Lay Avenue. This incident was caused by a third-party contractor doing piling works. More than 3,500 end-users may have been affected."
The service disruption affected the customers of all the three telcos as well as MyRepublic, with several users beginning to complain about the lack of service around 4pm on Tuesday.
Singtel, M1, StarHub and MyRepublic all took to Facebook to inform customers about the disruption, as well as to provide updates.
