SINGAPORE — M1 has added a new service to its roaming services, making it the only service provider which enables users to use their existing data bundle in six overseas destinations.
With a monthly subscription, users are able to leave their data connection on when they are overseas, sparing them from the difficulties of roaming internationally.
The six destinations are Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and the United States, the telco announced today (July 10).
On top of this roaming service, M1 will be launching a new Network Lock feature to preempt users from exceeding data usage and charges when roaming overseas.
The new feature, available in 10 additional countries, allows customers with unlimited data roaming plans to make and receive voice calls and messages on any network.
Several M1 users whom TODAY spoke to felt that the new roaming service has its pros and cons.
Mr Eugene Tan, 36, who runs his own business said: “I usually purchase a SIM card when I’m overseas on business trips for (personal use). This service is not overly expensive. However, I think it will (benefit) me if I have to go on short trips for a few days.”
Another M1 user, Ms Emily Yong, a 20-year-old polytechnic student, feels that the new feature is more useful for those who go on business trips frequently.
“(Even) when I travel overseas, I will use the wifi available at the hotel and (tap on) anywhere with wifi,” she said.
When contacted, Singtel and StarHub, two of Singapore’s main service providers referred to their existing data roaming plans.
Currently, Singtel users have a choice of plans for data roaming, which include the DataRoam Saver (Daily) plan for access in over 60 countries and Daily Roam Saver (Monthly) plan.
StarHub, on the other hand, provides a RoamEasy Daily plan for users to access data in 42 countries. In the coming months, StarHub will be enhancing this plan for a wider coverage of countries.
