SINGAPORE — She was browsing at a shop in Orchard Road when he approached her from behind and captured an upskirt video of her with his mobile phone. For that, 30-year-old Junus Tan Jun-Rong was sentenced on Monday (June 12) to two weeks’ jail, after he admitted to one count of insulting the modesty of his victim, who cannot be named on the court’s order.
The court heard that on the afternoon of July 12 last year, Tan, who works as a personal assistant at an investment company, put his mobile phone under his victim’s skirt at a shop at Shaw House, and switched on the video recording mode.
He was caught in the act by an employee of the store, who confronted him. A second witness later made a police report.
While waiting for the police to arrive, Tan deleted the video from his phone. No incriminating photos or videos were recovered by the police.
In mitigation, defence counsel T M Sinnadurai said it was his client’s first offence, and he had realised his mistake and regrets what he had done.
The court heard that Tan suffered from situational stress disorder since he was employed by his company two years ago.
He was said to be under “immense stress at the point of the offence” because of “a hostile superior at work”.
On why Tan had deleted the videos, which District Judge Imran Hamid said could have been tampering with evidence, Mr Sinnadurai said Tan had probably done so “in a moment of panic”.
The prosecution had asked for at least a jail term of two weeks for Tan. In sentencing him, the district judge called it a “brazen” act that intruded on the privacy of women.
Tan will start his sentence on Thursday. He could have been sentenced to a jail term of up to a year, or fined, or both.
